Nunnington Galleries artist Jonathan Pomroy is a passionate bird conservationist. Jonathan is the author of 'On Crescent Wings - a Portrait of the Swift', published by Mascot Media. The book combines his sketches with written observations made over the last 15 years. The book was launched at Birdfair 2018 and signed copies are now available on his website and at Nunnington Galleries. He is an area representative for Swift Conservation and co- founded Helmsley Swifts. He recently made a presentation about swifts at the Swifts Local Network Conference 2020 at Bristol Zoo. Jonathan regularly talks to groups using his artwork to inspire people to enjoy the wildlife around them. He also enjoys leading walks to show people birds.
2020 has already seen Jonathan’s work published in Red 67, a book published by the BTO, which highlights the 67 most threatened species of bird in the UK. This year will also see the publication of a new book about ring ouzels on the North York Moors, illustrated with Jonathan’s watercolours. He has been illustrating turtle doves for large information display boards to be placed at Sutton Bank and Danby NYMNP visitor centres this Spring. Increasingly his work is being used directly for the conservation of threatened species of birds. He is very keen to continue this work in the future with more single species projects planned.
Jonathan aims to spend as much time as possible working directly from life outside. The challenges of battling the elements to observe birds and landscapes he hopes, will help produce work of real integrity. He believes that art has an important role to play in conservation. Observing and sketching the natural world that he is passionate about, to share with others, is the main reason he paints.
